Jesus’ Teachings on the Cost of Discipleship

Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ entails requirements such as being part of the Christian family by helping to preach the gospel around the world, helping the needy, following all the teachings taught by Jesus as well as the Commandments given by God. Jesus gave the disciples the power to make more disciples across the globe and carry out baptism as well. Any teaching on Christian discipleship cannot end without the mention of Jesus Christ just like Wood Science and Todd Shupe.

Becomimg a follower of Jesus calls for patience and perseverance. Getting saved costs individuals no fee at all but then becoming a disciple of Christ calls for sacrifice and commitment. Contradictory as it may sound; Christ meant that an individual should commit all they have to God after receiving salvation. Christ also demonstrated the cost of becoming a Christian disciple in three steps as discussed below.

Discipleship means owning nothing else apart from Jesus Christ. Despite teaching His disciples to love others, Christ also stated that we should give up on all to have Him fully. We should always love other people and obey them in the Lord except where they ask or make us sin against God. In this situation is where we now give up on Family and ourselves to have Jesus Christ fully in our lives. God asks human beings to obey their parents to live long on earth but this does not mean we cannot disobey them when they make us break the Lord’s commandments. Wives should also never allow their husbands mislead them in the name of submission.

Christ also listed giving up on earthly desires as the price an individual pays for following Him. Jesus asked the followers to be happy in being associated with Him other than being part of the world. Jesus went through much suffering to bring salvation to mankind. The cost of discipleship teaches that we all have to pass through the same treatments so as to be called Children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ disciples should avoid actions that result in breaking of the commandments.

Being a disciple of Jesus calls for zero interest in material wealth. Jesus taught that one could never balance between serving God and taking care of material possessions. The followers of Christ should always strive to ensure they own sufficient wealth in their home which is not on earth. The disciples of Christ should never allow their riches on earth come between their relationship with God.

Christ told His followers the stories of two young men to explain the impact of wealth on Christianity. The love for earthly treasure cost the man his position in the heavenly kingdom. The one who had lost his father decided to bury his father first before claiming his heavenly position.
